Panthers loaded with grenadiers of I./Pz.Rgt. 24 of Panzer-Brigade 111 roll into the village to regroup on their way to Arracourt. With them are men of a propaganda company. Armed with Leica cameras, they fight a war of their own: the war of images.
For many of these young men it will be the last picture ever taken of them, in the bloody battle that is about to follow.

The vignette shows the exhumation of fallen German soldiers near a former Wehrmacht field hospital, somewhere in Europe in the 2010s.
Reburials and recoveries like this are normally carried out by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., the German War Graves Commission, and its partners.
I am proud to say that I have been a member and supporter of the Volksbund for 15 years now, so this project is also meant to honour the women and men of the Volksbund who work every day to clarify the fates of the missing.
When I joined at the age of 24, my reason was simple: I have my life ahead of me and the chance to make something of it. Many others my age were sacrificed for senseless goals and never had that chance. So it mattered to me to give these people at least a dignified resting place, and to help their families and relatives find out what happened to them – fates that have left deep wounds.

Welcome to my artist’s page, Time in Scale. My name is Michael Schneider and I was born in 1983 in Bad Berleburg, Germany.
Even at school my favourite subjects were history, geography and art. I was especially fascinated by the military side of history, following the conquests and expansion of past empires right up to modern times. Naturally I built the odd model kit back then and gained my first hands-on experience.
After my apprenticeship and getting married, I returned to the hobby, inspired by François Verlinden, Bob Letterman and Shepard Paine, whose professional approach to building models and dioramas set entirely new standards in the field.
In 2012 I entered my first competition, in Mol, Belgium, and won a silver medal straight away. Hooked by that success, I now regularly attend national and international shows and competitions, where I have made many friends who share this passion.
A particular highlight for me was taking part in the World Model Expo in 2022, which is held only every three years, that year in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. In each of the three Master categories I entered, I won a bronze medal.
I have also painted box art for several companies – the pictures on the box lid showing the finished figure or bust – which I value as another form of recognition for my work. At the request and urging of fellow modellers and painters, I set up my own “studio” in 2021, Time in Scale – Michael Schneider, to show my work to a wider audience.
The main focus of my work is the Second World War, mostly the Axis powers, but I am not limited to it.
This site is part of my new and exciting project to present my work to fellow modellers and to anyone who would like to become one.
